Today is World Patient Safety Day!
Haven't heard of this yet? It is new! Recognizing patient safety as a global health priority, 194 countries came together in May 2019 at the 72nd World Health Organization (WHO) World Health Assembly to establish September 17, 2019 as the very first annual World Patient Safety Day.
Going forward, on this date, every year, WHO will bring focus and attention to patient safety around the world, aiming to increase public awareness and motivate engagement. Together, communities of the world can enhance understanding, spur solidarity and take positive action towards improving patient safety.
One thing I have learned in 22 years of nursing is that we are more alike than different. An issue here is likely an issue in another system, and we can do a better job sharing our experiences with each other to improve patient safety.
Healthcare providers, I encourage you to share this information in your workplace.
